Vali Myers Luxury Boxset with Two Notebooks

Question: How can we turn the pictures and thoughts of Vali Myers into an unique and special collectors item?

Solution: Together with the outstanding and professional photographer Marco Bakker we decided to develop 2 notebooks in a luxury box, made out of special paper.

The value of tekst and image can be enhanced, by collecting them in a unique special edition print.
Vali Myers (August 2^nd, 1930 – February 12^th, 2003) is seen by photographer Marco Bakker as a ‘free spirit’. She is an Australian artist who has spent a large part of her life living with Gianni Menichetti, artist and poet, in what Marco calls a “wildlife oasis” near Positano, on Italy’s Amalfi Coast. In 1950, Vali acquires cult status because of her lifestyle and her special work.

In the early 1970’s Gianni met Vali in her ‘wild kingdom by the sea’, as he describes it himself. For more than thirty years, he lived together with her and her animal kingdom through good times and bad. And they were, as it were, “struck by fate.” After Vali passed away in 2003, Gianni continued to live in this ‘wild kingdom’ to, as he puts it, protect their unique piece of earth in the way Vali had imagined.

In May of the year 2000, Marco Vali visits Myers and takes many beautiful pictures of Vali in the last years of her life. Together with poet Gianni Menichetti, he is making a special reference work about her exceptional way of life. Marco sees it as a tribute to Vali Myers who is a great source of inspiration for him. With this special edition ‘Running Before The Wind’ Marco wants to show what a ’true free spirit’ Vali Myers was.

“Running Before The Wind” contains a collection of photographs and the most poetic passages from letters from Vali to Gianni, that together best represent Vali’s special way of looking at nature, all living animals and the world of humans. “Animals and nature are what they are and within them you will find great beauty.”
People think that Vali created a dream world, but it wasn’t a ‘dream’, that was ‘real life’, according to Marco Bakker.

The execution of the product:
Together with Marco we created two notebooks in a luxury box.
The paper that we chose is Tintoretto Gesso from Fedrigoni.
Het papier dat we kozen is Tintoretto Gesso van Fedrigoni. A particularly beautiful uncoated paper with a beautiful structure.

The covers of the notebooks were printed in 1 color screen printing, but then twice on top of each other, in order to get a particularly good coverage on this textured paper. The pink cover was printed with black on Tintoretto Ceylon Cubeba and the blue with silver on Tintoretto Ceylon Ginepro.

The interior was also printed on Tintoretto Gesso on an HP Indigo, which uses liquid inks to create the correct stroke in the paper, and is most similar to conventional offset printing. This way, you do not get the annoying and false ‘gloss’ of ’toner’ on the paper, as with other digital printing techniques.
Marco’s photos, which are usually transferred in black and white, have been lithographically processed in advance and deliberately processed and printed into full color (cmyk) in order to achieve the correct black and white color tone.

The notebooks are bound using a unique singer stitch with respectivley black and silver threads, matching the screen-printed covers.

The luxury box and storage case for the notebooks is made entirely of black solid cardboard, covered with Tintoretto Gesso Black Pepper and provided with a beautiful blind embossing including the title ‘Running Before The Wind’.
It is a custom-made ‘hinge box’ which is ‘zipped’ at the corners and glued in a special way to form a unique storage cassette.

Due to the special appearance and execution of this collection, most signed copies were sold out in no time. Orders followed from all over the world and in particular from Australia and New Zealand.

Durable and Environmentally Friendly Paper

Question: What kind of paper is best if I want to use Durable and Environmentally Friendly paper?

Solution: We will describe three different types of Durable and Environmentally Friendly types of paper, which together can provide a solution for many different types of printing productions.

The value of print can be enhanced by producing it on Durable, mostly Environmentally Friendly or 100% Recycled paper.
The graphic or printing industry is almost self-sufficient and more than 85% of all paper is recycled in the Netherlands. This makes it one of the most sustainable or environmentally friendly industries we know. Our paper comes from specially constructed production forests and most paper therefore carries the FSC® quality mark for responsible forest management.

But a lot of the paper we use comes from recycling. Paper can be recycled up to 7 times. But we are also finding more and more alternative (waste) sources from which we can make paper, such as paper made from agricultural waste or marble grit. For example, agriculture leaves us tomato fibers or fibers from other fruits and vegetables from which we can now make paper or a specially grown elephant grass.

Below we would like to take a closer look at 3 different and very diverse Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly Paper Types that together can offer a solution for many different printing productions.

NAUTILUS® – 100% recycled
Nautilus® Classic is a 100% recycled and slightly rough paper, the way paper feels like what you find in your printer drawer and what we also call ‘uncoated’. It is available in a ‘Classic’ version which can be a nice replacement for the Cyclus Offset, which unfortunately no longer exists. Nautilus® Classic is an off-white or very light cream (/grey) type of paper that is much less yellow than the well-known Biotop 3®.

But Nautilus® is also available in a SuperWhite version. A slightly rough paper and can be called ‘uncoated’, but intended for printed matter where the gray tint of recycled paper can be experienced as a nuisance, but where the focus is on sustainability.

Both Nautilus versions are of course available in a wide range of grammages or thickness.

PaperWise® – Paper made from agricultural waste
Stems and leaves that remain after harvesting are processed into paper and cardboard with a minimal ecological footprint. Also a slightly rough-feeling paper that is available in various grades; white, light brown/beige and two-sided white-light brown/beige.

Excellent for office paper or corporate identity printing such as business cards, stationery and envelopes, but it is also frequently used in the food industry for the production of French fries bags, food trays and eco cups. It can also be used for all other conceivable printed products such as Covers for Brochures, Leaflets, Displays, Boxes, etc.

STONE PAPER® – 100% Waterproof
A tree-free paper made for 80% from crushed stone (grit) or marble grit. Completely made from waste material. It feels very soft and plastic-like and is 100% waterproof. Water or oil has no effect on the quality.
Stone Paper® is therefore very suitable, for example, for the production of Maps, Bicycle Maps and Water Charts or other printing applications that require a lot of folding and unfolding and where the printed matter must be able to withstand a splash of water. Also think of printed products that must be able to lie on the counter or in humid environments, such as cookbooks or even carrier bags that must be able to be used in all weathers, but also menu cards, etc.

Of course, this paper is also available in different grammages from thick to thin and in various sizes.

Books with Special Finishing Methods

Question: How can we give two books an unique and special appearance?

Solution: We have chosen to give both books their own special finish to give them both their own look and feel.

The value of a book can be enhanced by using a special finishing method.
We did just that for two picture books about New York and Denmark. In both cases we have taken in account the colours of the American and Danish flags in the covers and in the threading we used.

The picture book about New York is a so called ‘softcover’ book of a large size and with an ‘open back’ or ‘open binding method’. As a result, you can clearly see the sections stacked on top of each other in the spine and you can clearly see the binding method using a red thread from the American flag. That gives this book a great and beautiful look. We delivered this book in a ‘case’ which is covered with red paper on the inside and blue linen on the outside. Both colours symbolize the American flag.

The picture book about Denmark is a so called ‘hardcover’ book, also of a large size format. However, this book has a ‘softcover’ and ‘closed’ binding method and actually consists of a softcover cover and endpapers of red paper, finished with white thread which gives a nice contrast against the red. Both colors symbolize the Danish flag. Two boards of thick gray board have been glued to the softcover cover, making it appear to be a robust whole and making a ‘softcover’ book a ‘hardcover’. Normally, with ‘hardcover’ books, the gray board is pasted on, over and against to form a hard binding, but here we have deliberately chosen to show the gray board so that it gets a beautiful natural ‘look and feel’. In the interior of this book, high-gloss and slightly rough and matte pages alternate.

This way we have delivered the customer two unique books, both with their own special finishing methods.

New York – I just received the book: IT LOOKS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!! Thank you so much for all your input and effort.

Denmark – I am super happy with the end result; Thanks man!

Distinctive Viewmaster Mailing

Question: Can we send a Viewmaster with a special disc as an invitation to a party, instead of a card?

Solution: We had the customer design seven slides, which we developed into a specially made Viewmaster Disc, which when watched in sequence shaped into the invitation to the party.

You can realise a high response, by turning your mailings into an eye catching, distinctive and fun objects.
In collaboration with Hollands Lof, we have developed a special Viewmaster disc containing 2x 7 different slides which, when viewed together and in succession, formed the invitation to a party.

A real Black Viewmaster, equipped with a specially developed Viewmaster disc and a Paper Invitation in an Environmentally Conscious Recycled Packaging. All together they formed a Playful but above all High-profile, Striking and Distinctive Mailing, which resulted in a large number of registrations for a party.

We often develop Distinctive and especially Striking Mailings for customers that have delivered a response of up to 95%.

Verb Wheel Turntables Van Dale

Question: We want to make a verb wheel in the form of a turntable. But as flat as possible, without a thickening rotating mechanism made of plastic or metal in the middle. So when we stick the turntables in the front of the dictionaries, the covers do not get damaged under the pressure of the other dictionaries in a box. We also save a lot on the environment, because we don’t need all those plastic push buttons or metal rivets.

Solution: We have developed turntables that do not have any bulge in the middle and that consist entirely of paper or cardboard. This includes a specially developed turning mechanism made of paper or cardboard. To make the price-quality ratio as good as possible, partly in view of the high circulation, the challenge was also to be able to punch, crease, fold and glue the turntables completely in line and in one machine pass. Of course, the discs had to be able to rotate properly. This required an extremely precisely tuned finish.

A verb wheel turntable that is as flat as three layers of cardboard and still rotates perfectly and works well.

The vast majority of turntables made of paper or cardboard have a hollow rivet or rivet in the middle as a turning mechanism and some have a plastic push button. Because this turntable is placed in the front of a dictionary, considerable damage can be caused to the cover of the dictionary because these turning methods form a thickened rotating centre of the turntable. By developing a special rotating centre of paper or cardboard, these turntables do not contain any bulge in the middle. This also means that the environment is not unnecessarily burdened because we do not have to add extra environmentally harmful elements such as metal or plastic.

The printing process
The verb guides are printed in several and different PMS colors per language, on a special type of cardboard, similar to the cover of the relevant dictionary. Van Dale’s high-quality produced dictionaries are also ‘color on cut’, which means that the sides of the dictionaries are provided with a colour, in this case black. This gives them an extra unique and distinctive look.

Other applications of these turntables

This environmentally friendly application of the turning mechanism of paper or cardboard turntables is only financially profitable with large print runs of turntables. This is because the development of the special dies and the labour-intensive adjustment of all machines during the finishing process entail higher costs in this production method. This method of producing a turntable made of cardboard or paper is therefore extremely suitable for the production of, for example, parking discs for municipalities in high volumes, as an advertising campaign for certain consumer productions, as translation guides for study material, but also as a work aid for making certain measurements and evaluating the results and determining the outcome. The turntables can be developed in any conceivable shape or size and can be equipped with multiple viewing windows and can even be used on both sides.

We are happy with the production models! We are very content. The quality of the printing is also great.

Giftboxes and Gift Cards Bax Music

Question: We would like to issue gift cards with different values, presented in a luxury giftbox and in 5 languages. Every BAX Music Gift Card should have 3 unique codes which can communicate with our systems, and can be scanned through the box and the shrink wrap.

Solution: We have developed gift voucher boxes consisting of a luxurious black cardboard, which we have printed in the shape of a hinged box. With inside an interior or table, on which the gift voucher or Bax Music Gift Card is placed in a raised position. This is how it is presented beautifully as soon as the box is opened. There is a precisely tailored recess in both the table and the back of the box. This way, the three unique codes on the back of the gift voucher are scanned while the box is still closed and sealed.

Most gift vouchers or gift cards exist in the form of a plastic card. Either separate or pasted on a card, or put in a folder. If you provide high-quality products or services, you also want to issue high-value gift cards. After all, you want to achieve unity in your image for your brand. By presenting your gift cards in a luxurious way, receiving a gift voucher really becomes a gift.
For your company, brand, product or service, a gift voucher or gift card is often the first thing the recipient comes into contact with. And you can only make a first impression once.

The production process
Given the high numbers and keeping the costs manageable, we ensured that the process could be fully automated. Each gift voucher is uniquely numbered with up to three different codes and each represents its own value. After closing the box, it had to remain clear on the outside which language and value is in the box. We solved that by applying a special punching in the interior and bottom of the box. For example, even after closing and sealing the box, the three codes on the gift voucher can still be scanned. Of course we tested this extensively in advance by manufacturing various models of the box and the gift vouchers. The actual production process was simulated to ensure a perfect end product.

Other applications of luxury gift card boxes or hinged boxes.

These luxury gift card boxes can be produced in any size and with any imaginable print. We can also produce these or other luxury boxes with lacquers or foils that may or may not bulge. Think of boxes with gold foil, silver foil, glitter foil or holographic foils.
